Reflection
The process of providing peer review to writers whose work is similar to one’s own is extremely useful. The work of other scholars can be a fantastic source of inspiration throughout my creative process, and I enjoy the opportunity to improve my own writing by helping others do the same. Revision is an essential step in the process of writing, and it is through this process that writers are able to incorporate various perspectives in their work while still maintaining a personal voice. The process of peer review is a very useful method of revision, and according to Steven Williams, a University of Hawaii professor, "as a peer reviewer, your job is not to provide answers. You raise questions; the writer makes the choices. You act as a mirror, showing the writer how the draft looks to you and pointing out areas which need attention." Making the first step and providing meaningful constructive criticism to someone else makes them more likely to do the same for your work, eliciting a mutually beneficial arrangement. When two researchers are familiar with each other's style and work, it is much easier for them to provide feedback to each other throughout a writing process. Included below are two samples of my peer review on colleagues' papers, and the revisions I received from them were very helpful in the refinement of my draft.
Peer Review Feedback - Sample One
Madison- I think you have written a solid essay here, but I am also a big fan of spider man, so I might be a bit biased. I was very impressed by your analysis of grief in its various forms – you have clearly done your research! That said, I do think there are areas where you can improve the essay, like any other draft. I left specific margin comments in areas where I felt you could improve your grammar to better illustrate your points, and there are also a few paragraphs where I feel you might benefit from restructuring your argument a bit to better support the claim in your thesis. Furthermore, I think you have more to say in your conclusion; Superhero stories inspire people and connect them over shared experiences. What do you have to say about why Spider-Man’s grief is important? You have written a fantastic paper about it, so I am sure you will be able to find a greater significance to connect your argument to.
Peer Review Feedback - Sample Two
Trenton- You have written a fantastic paper outlining the benefits of renewables and have clearly done research about not just the climate necessity of switching off fossil fuels, but also the economic benefits of switching to renewables. That said, I feel like there are several places where you can develop your argument further. I am in agreement with you about renewables, and a lot of the research you mentioned is not particularly debatable. I would suggest using your sources to debunk arguments that the fossil fuel industry uses to discourage renewables. Overall, I think this is a solid draft, and now it’s time to edit for grammar and finish out your works cited page.
