I have always had a deep interest in both music and emerging technological developments, likely due to the new experiences they allow me to engage in as a visually impaired person, and those interests  metastasized into research on the significance of new technology to the music business. Throughout my annotated bibliography, I present and evaluate several sources on the viability of artificial intelligence in the music industry, along with the industry's past responses to creative disruption. In my research journey on this topic, I have read and evaluated journal articles, magazine articles, webpages, United States legislation, and even listened to podcasts. Through my analysis of these sources, I have formulated a thesis and decided on a direction for my accompanying research paper. Evaluating this many sources was a thorough endeavor, especially since not all the research I did was suitable for citation in an academic context, and this created issues for me throughout my drafting of the research paper, as I wrote about topics that were ultimately unrelated to my true topic, which is analyzing the past of the music industry to discuss its present and future. Following the annotated bibliography, I created a proposal to outline the direction of my research, as well as receive approval on the direction I plan to take it. this proposal showcases some of the sources I plan to use, as well as my methodology throughout the research process. I have never had to write a proposal this extensive before, so it was new to me, but I believe that I have formatted it appropriately to clearly indicate the research I intend to write about. I selected a very broad topic for my research, which made it difficult to clearly articulate my thoughts on the topic, and I am currently narrowing down my paper through the draft revision process. Refining my thesis was essential throughout this process, as I intend to focus more on the responses of the music industry to creative disruption, rather than the discrete usage of generative AI in music. Both of these documents were essential steps towards formulating and refining my thesis and the scope of the paper's discussion, and the wide net that I cast throughout my research provided me with creative freedom to decide how to present my topic.
