Reflection

The selection of genre is an essential piece of the writing process, as it determines the final form that one's work will take, regardless of whether they are writing a blog post or a New York Times bestseller. Throughout the course of this class, I have written in several different academic genres, and the differences between these examples illuminates the key components of distinct types of writing. In the example reading response, I use a much less technical tone, as I am writing a rhetorical analysis, which is based entirely on evidence from a single source. The example research paper has different requirements, as I need to analyze multiple sources, as well as blend them with my own thoughts about the topic. In order to explain and synthesize multiple sources, there needs to be an overarching theme that processes logically from its supporting arguments. Research writing is much less subjective than rhetorical analysis, and well-done research will read very diferently rom rhetorical analysis, as the underlying logic is far more complicated and not as open for subjective interpretation by a reader.
