Reflection

Informational literacy is one of the most important skills gained through education, and is even more critical in the digital age, where truth can easily become distorted. Throughout these example pieces, I demonstrate my informational literacy skill in two different ways. The first, displayed in my reading response, is the ability to evaluate and analyze sources, distilling long papers and articles into a concise response that compares and contrasts their overarching themes. I also use these analytical skills in my research log, however there is the added element of source selection. In a reading response, the source material is typically provided by an authoritative source and presumably holds at least an appearance level of intellectual legitimacy. Conversely, a research log requires the researcher to locate and analyze their own sources, discarding uncreditable information in favor of reliable sources. In my research log, I demonstrate informational literacy by utilizing sources of varied modality (A book, a website, and a podcast), as well as evaluating them for credibility and relevance to my intended topic. In the interests of creating an authoritative piece of writing on my topic, I exclusively used primary sources in this research log. I was then able to connect them to my research topic through their shared theme of music technologies' development.
